This 62.4-mile out-and-back ride travels along flat terrain in Cedar City, and hilly terrain to the west of the city. The hilly terrain is found within the Iron Mountains, which rise to 7,815 feet.

Our quiet soon came to an end as we entered Highway 101. If you have ever driven down this highway in the summer you have seen bicycle tourists in relatively large numbers. In all of our tours we have never seen so many bicycle tourists. A farm stand operator explained that we were riding against the grain as most bike tourists travel north to south.

Salt Lake County Council was considering having a bill introduced in the Utah State Legislature which would require all bicyclists riding in any canyon in Utah to ride single file. The idea and impetus for this legislation came from the Emigration Canyon Community Council (ECCC), and arose from the longstanding simmering tension between motorists and bicyclists in Emigration Canyon.
