This is not your typical race article about winners and losers, and race statistics. Why, because at a point during this race it became a race for survival not a competition to get back first. It became a tale of heroism, perseverance, determination, fortitude against adversity, comradery between fellow mountain bikers, and every single person out on course displayed true grit.

A Jekyll and Hyde Solo 1,000-Mile Bike Ride

My ride would begin in central Oregon, go out to and up the coast to Astoria, then east through the Columbia River Gorge, crossing Bridge of the Gods to Washington, over to Lewiston, Idaho, then to Missoula, Montana, and south through Idaho to bring me home to Salt Lake Valley. If I hurried, I thought I could do it in about 4_ weeks.

Can I just say? I don’t get it! Electronic shifting has been around for quite awhile but never quite caught on. And I understood that. But now, electronic shifting is being pushed heavily and is beginning to catch on. And I don’t get that. I mean, how hard is it to push a lever to shift?
